This Is News To Me, Piranha Remake Makes Splashes

It was just last summer where I first got a glimpse at the b-movie Piranha series. I didn’t get to see the original Piranha, a movie that is now regarded as a classic of sorts, but I got a chance to see the sequel Piranha 2: The Spawning. Yes, the movie was even more ludicrous than the title but I guess that was a part of its charm. In retrospect it seemed like a more polished version of Sasquatch Hunters. I’m sure everyone has seen a movie so bad that it just works and that’s exactly what Piranha did (or at least its sequel).
More than a year ago it was announced that it would be getting the remake treatment from director Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes [2006]). Besides that, it looks as if it will be entirely live-action 3D. While this all sounds like a bad dream his reasoning seems honorable enough. He told Shock Till You Drop in a recent interview, “We are thinking at the same time, let’s see a real R-rated movie in 3D with the new technology! So, Piranha is going to be completely in 3D.” I guess that’s reasonable enough, but the biggest worry on people’s minds is not how the film is going to look. It’s how the story develops and in this case Aja promises it to be “completely, completely, completely different.”
It will be interesting to see how it really turns out considering Dimension films is actually putting a lot of faith in the film giving it a July 24, 2009 release date. Usually all the bad summer movies squeak into late August or early September. Now it’s just a matter of holding faith in man that didn’t live up to promises with 2006’s remake of The Hills Have Eyes.
Aja also promised one more thing of the Piranha remake: 3D boobs. I think it’s safe to say this isn’t going to be the typical 3D film and probably more from the vein of last year’s Beowulf than, let’s say, Ratatouille. More information on the film can be found at either First Showing or its original source, Shock Till You Drop.
