In Theaters: 05.02.08

Do you smell that? It’s flowers blooming, grass growing, and leaves sprouting. Combine that with all the summer blockbusters arriving in theaters and you’ll be quite the happy camper. Last year at this time we were treated with the third Spiderman installment. I was all excited for some more webslinging action but when I heard Peter Parker started dancing on Piano’s in the third act, I got a little reluctant. To be honest, it was one of the first movies I was ready to walk out on. It horrified me and disgraced comic book movies everywhere. Marvel hopes to rectify the situation this year with Jon Favreau’s Iron Man. Could you really expect him to go astray with someone like Robert Downey Jr. in the leading role? You did? Shame on you.

Out of all of Marvel’s superheroes, Iron Man is the only one who seems to be more like a creation of the DC universe. His flaws aren’t typical among other Marvel characters, most of which have had some contact with Stan Lee’s influence. Unlike Spiderman, Iron Man doesn’t face problems like acne or finding a balance between his superhero lifestyle and work. He’s a playboy, witty and rich — all three characteristics Robert Downey Jr. has plenty of experience portraying. This isn’t going to have any competition this weekend, big numbers should be expected. Expect a review in the coming weeks, both Robb and myself will be seeing it soon.

With all this talk about Iron Man arriving and blowing everyone away it’s going to be easy to forget about Son of Rambow. Will Proudfoot is exposed to the wonderment of Rambo: First Blood after he finds a pirated copy but since he’s raised among The Brethren (Britain’s version of an Amish like community), movies and music aren’t allowed. After watching all the blood infused action he’s floored. Will teams up with the school bully to reconstruct the film; however, this proves to be difficult while the boys try to keep the film a secret from The Brethren. I first heard about Son of Rambow a few months ago when the trailer was shown before my viewing of Juno. Promising it could be, and a good second choice for the weekend.

The girls used to go nuts for Patrick Dempsey back in the day, or maybe they still do, I have no idea. Either way he’s back after starring in Disney’s winsome musical, Enchanted last year. Made of Honor is anything but enchanting, or winsome for that matter, instead it’s just another story that can be filed under “pointless chick flicks.” It will undoubtedly have the same timeline any other romantic comedy follows except with a different face. Sorry if you were excited for this, you might want to try and find help if you were, though.

We’ll have to see if the Tracey Fragments and Speed Racer can churn out a good set of reviews. I’m not pumped for Speed Racer at all, but the Tracey Fragments looked cool and I’m not just saying that because Ellen Page is in it.
